Practical steps to preserve zari borders, preserve silk luster, and maintain pleated fans across years of performances.
Preserving the Life of Stage Wear
Classical dance costumes represent significant artistic and emotional value. Proper maintenance ensures your costume looks as radiant on its fiftieth performance as it did on your Arangetram day.
Key Care Rules:
- Post-Performance Airing: Never pack a sweat-damp costume straight into plastic bags. Air it inside out in a shaded, well-ventilated room for at least 12 hours.
- Pleat Preservation: After the costume is dry, fold the pleats neatly along their stitched creases and roll gently around a soft tube or fold flat in pure cotton cloth.
- Zari Protection: Real and imitation zari tarnishes when exposed to moisture and air pollutants. Store zari sections wrapped in unbleached mulmul or muslin fabric.
- Dry Cleaning Only: Water washing causes silk shrinkage and will flatten the structured crispness of the pleated fans.
